Reactive astrocytes in brain disorders

We have investigated the pathological roles of astrocytes in the brain. For the pathological function of astrocytes, we have demonstrated that SNpc reactive astrocytes contribute to Parkinson's disease (PD) pathology through aberrant GABA production which is mediated by a mitochondrial enzyme, monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). We are investigating whether and how reactive astrocytes contribute to symptomatology and progression of PD using various animal models.

In addition, we are studying the direct causal relationship between astrocytic GABA and cortical hypometabolism (diaschisis) following subcortical stroke. We adopt multidisciplinary approaches including electrophysiology, molecular neurobiology, histology, behavior assays, and genetic modulation.
